Job Description and Duties

Position is for a 10 month school year with eligibility for an additional 2 months to be paid by State Special School Benefits through Unemployment Insurance.

Under the supervision of the High School Assistant Principal, the Teaching Assistant will provide services in the classroom and community to support the classroom teacher in the education of deaf students.

• Under guidance and supervision of the certified classroom teacher, work with students for small group lessons, individual instruction and large group instruction. Instruction may occur on campus or in the community.

• Assist in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials; keep routine records.

• Assist in bus duty, before and after school, lunch duty and recess supervision.

• Assist in supervision and escort of students around the campus including to and from assemblies, cafeteria, recess, and infirmary, as well as in off campus learning opportunities.

• Operate classroom equipment; tutor students and grade objectively student work as indicated by teacher.

Working Conditions

Subject to fingerprinting and criminal record clearance by the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation and Tuberculosis clearance. This position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

Special Requirements

• The position(s) require(s) fluency in the American Sign Language language. If the State of California does not have a current record documenting your fluency in this language, you will be required to successfully pass an approved language fluency test prior to being hired.

EXAMINATION

Individuals must have taken and passed an examination to obtain list eligibility for the classification in order to apply.  List eligibility may be obtained by meeting the minimum qualifications as outlined in the examination bulletin, and obtaining a passing score on the Qualifications Assessment Questionnaire.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Follow signed, oral and written direction; possess knowledge of child guidance principles; evaluate situations accurately and take effective action; assist with supervision and learning activities. Experience working with children in a school. Background knowledge of various disabilities and how to address them academically, behaviorally and socially.
